IANTD Recreational Essentials

Recreational Essentials is IANTD's skills-development course for certified divers who want to be safer, more comfortable and more efficient underwater. It isn't about going deeper or staying longer. It's about diving better.

What you'll learn Buoyancy, trim, balance and propulsion techniques Refining and expanding your core diving skills Equipment streamlining and configuration, including redundancy Dive safety, situational awareness and accident prevention Dive planning and gas management, including gas analysis and cylinder labelling Decompression overview and minimum decompression procedures Team skills: buddy awareness and stop/go/emergency communication

In the water You'll work through a skill circuit that simulates depth changes, sensory variation and sharp turns. You'll also practise an out-of-gas swim and buoyancy-failure drills, holding neutral buoyancy and good trim through every skill. The course includes at least 120 minutes of in-water skill development. Groups are capped at 4 divers per instructor.

Your rig, your course Bring the setup you want to master: single tank, doubles or sidemount. You'll build your skills in the gear you'll actually dive.

Who it's for Open Water Diver certified (IANTD or equivalent, e.g. PADI Open Water) Age 15+ (12–14 as Junior Essentials with guardian consent)

Essentials builds the control, awareness and gas planning that advanced recreational and technical courses assume you already have. Divers who take it first get far more out of every course after it, including IANTD Tek Essentials and the path toward decompression diving.
